Bangladesh is currently experiencing severe monsoon weather conditions, particularly across Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Sylhet and other coastal regions and the situation continues to affect transportation networks, port operations and supply chain activities throughout the country.
CURRENT WEATHER SITUATION
Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) update: BMD continues to advise Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 for the maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra due to active monsoon conditions and stormy weather over the Bay of Bengal.
Severity: Chattogram recorded exceptionally heavy rainfall, ranging from 330mm to over 400mm within 24 hours, one of the highest rainfall events experienced in recent decades.
Forecast: Heavy to very heavy rain is forecast to continue in parts of the country, with risks of flash flooding, waterlogging, river swelling and landslides in hilly areas.
OPERATIONAL IMPACT ON LOGISTICS
Port Operations: Cargo handling at Chattogram Port Outer Anchorage has been significantly disrupted due to rough sea conditions and adverse weather. Several cargo vessels are awaiting discharge, while lighter vessel movements have been restricted or suspended. Although container terminal operations remain functional, productivity has slowed due to continuous rainfall and restricted landside access. Reports indicate:
Rail & Air Transport: Rail services between Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar have experienced disruptions due to submerged tracks. Flight movements have experienced diversions and operational disruptions due to adverse weather conditions.
While Chattogram Port remains operational, the combined impact of rough sea conditions, suspended lighterage operations, waterlogged roads and prolonged rainfall is creating significant strain across the logistics chain.
We are closely monitoring developments and will provide further updates as the weather and operational situation evolve.
