Written by KLN Oceania | Aug 29, 2025 7:23:31 AM

Please be reminded that the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) Risk Season commences on 1 September 2025 and will apply to goods shipped between 1 September 2025 and 30 April 2026 (inclusive). Measures also apply to vessels that berth, load, or tranship from target risk countries during this period.

We have compiled a list of resources for your convenience:

Key Changes for 2025–26 Season

  • Emerging Risk Countries: Republic of Korea and Japan added to the list.

  • Airfreight Inspections: Target high-risk goods from the USA and China will be subject to random inspections.

  • New Treatment Option: Introduction of Ethyl Formate as an approved offshore BMSB treatment under AusTreat.

  • Policy Update: New application process for the BMSB In-Transit and Rolled Policy.

Safeguarding Arrangements

The Safeguarding Arrangements Scheme is again available this season, offering an alternative clearance pathway for sea cargo imports of six or more hard-sided containers of target high-risk goods.

AusTreat & Ethyl Formate

  • AusTreat is the government-to-industry assurance scheme regulating pre-border biosecurity treatments.

  • From this season, Ethyl Formate has been approved for offshore use only as a BMSB treatment.

  • Treatment providers must be registered with DAFF under AusTreat to conduct Ethyl Formate fumigations.

  • Class 19 accredited persons must declare consignments treated with Ethyl Formate by using the AEI “TREATEDEF” in the Integrated Cargo System.

We strongly encourage all customers and supply chain partners to familiarise themselves with these requirements to avoid delays or compliance issues during the 2025–26 BMSB season.
