NZ – New Zealand – MSC Wallaby Service: All New Zealand Port Calls to Cease – May 4, 2026

Written by KLN Oceania | May 6, 2026 4:41:38 AM

What's Changing

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has advised that its Wallaby service will cease all calls to New Zealand ports. The first sailing to operate without New Zealand calls will be MSC NADIA – Voyage KN617A.

The revised Wallaby rotation will be: HKG – YTN – XMN – SHA – NBO – SYD – MEL – BNE – HKG

New Zealand is no longer included in this loop.

Booking Impact

No new bookings to New Zealand destinations will be accepted under the Wallaby service. All cargo already released or currently in transit will continue to be delivered as planned under existing arrangements.

Context

This is a significant development for New Zealand trade. The Wallaby service was relaunched by MSC in August 2024 as a dedicated North Asia–Australia–New Zealand direct service. In April 2026, Tauranga was removed from the rotation. The May 4, 2026 notice from MSC completes that withdrawal, with all remaining New Zealand ports now dropped from the service.

The revised rotation is Australia-only, covering Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

What This Means for New Zealand Importers and Exporters

With the Wallaby service no longer calling New Zealand, shippers moving cargo between North Asia (China) and New Zealand will need to consider alternatives, which may include:

  • Transhipment via Australian gateway ports with onward feeder connection to New Zealand
  • Alternative carrier services on the North Asia–New Zealand trade lane

Transit times and costs may be affected depending on the routing solution applied. The exact effective date of the change has not been specified beyond the reference to MSC NADIA – Voyage KN617A as the first affected sailing.
