NZ – Auckland – Port of Auckland Closure & Freight Delays: Cyclone Vaianu – April 11–13, 2026
Tropical Cyclone Vaianu is forecast to make landfall between Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula on Sunday 12 April 2026. MetService has issued a range of severe weather warnings across the North Island, with the system currently classified as Category 2 and carrying wind gusts of up to 140km/h in affected areas. Auckland Emergency Management has activated its Emergency Coordination Centre at Orange Alert level.
In response, the Port of Auckland has confirmed a temporary suspension of all vessel and port operations across both Fergusson Terminal and Multi-Cargo.

During the closure, the port will maintain a skeleton crew for essential safety monitoring, and vessels will be moved to sea or have arrivals delayed as required.
Customer Relief Measures
The Port of Auckland has confirmed the following relief measures for cargo affected during the closure period:
- VBS booking fees will be waived for the affected period.
- Two additional days of free time will apply to impacted cargo.
Downstream Freight Impact
KLN Oceania anticipates that the port closure will affect freight availability and container movements into the week of 14 April 2026. We are working to minimise delays and will proactively contact customers where shipments are directly affected.
