Severe weather across the lower North Island is causing significant disruption to freight movements in and around the Wellington region, affecting both Cook Strait ferry services and road freight operations.

Cook Strait Ferry Services

Both Interislander and Bluebridge services have been suspended for April 19–20, 2026, due to the ongoing weather event. Inter-island freight movement is currently on hold. KLN Oceania is monitoring the situation and will prioritise freight dispatch as soon as conditions allow safe resumption of sailings.

Road Network — Lower North Island

Multiple state highways across the Wellington and Hutt Valley region are closed or severely disrupted. Confirmed closures as of April 19 include State Highways 58 and 59, the northbound section of SH2 (Belmont to Haywards interchange), Eastern Hutt Road, and Paekakariki Hill Road. Slips, surface flooding, and lane restrictions are affecting remaining open routes, with delays expected across the network.

An Orange Heavy Rain Warning issued by MetService covers the Tararua Range, Kapiti Coast, and Wellington region, with further heavy rain forecast. Conditions may change rapidly — further closures remain possible.

Impact on Linehaul & Deliveries

These conditions are directly affecting linehaul schedules and delivery timeframes across the lower North Island. KLN Oceania is managing the situation as best as possible and will move freight when it is safe to do so.
